Biography

Education:
I trained at Huddersfield University completing a BA in Theatre Studies, an MA in Multimedia and Education and a PGCE in Further Education. I currently combine my role as a lecturer with painting and exhibition work.

Mediums:
Acrylic, enamel and mixed media

Concepts and ideas:
My creative ideas are heavily influenced by my background in theatre and I have developed my creative ideas to mirror some of the concepts found in live performance. I am interested in treating the canvas as a stage and use colour, movement and textures to capture live ‘improvisation'. My aim is to secure the unrestricted, spontaneous action of improvisation in time and space in paintings. For me, the paint is a vehicle for ‘freezing time' and allowing a genuine response by the creator to be saved and seen by others.

Themes:
My works take stimuli from nature such as wood, stone and metals. I work completly from my imagination. There are never any reference points when I paint. What I mean by this is that I never work from 'still life' or photographs. Most of the usual securities for painters are removed. The shapes, colours and details aren't infront of me. I work from my imagination and memory and I find that the impulse to create the works are emotional responses to these stimuli.
